Animal masks are some of the first masks created by humanity. These masks are not well known as they are predominantly connected to the Nama Nkungu clan and used in the Southern Angolan part of Africa by the Chokwe people who live there. Most research amongst the Chokwe was conducted in the Northern parts of Angola which accounts for the lack of knowledge surrounding the animal masks. Mukanda, which forms the history of the people, has being documented as a chance occurrence whereby someone cut his penis on a sharp leaf and then mukanda came into being and such a story would be related to an uninitiated person or an outsider. However, the elders of the Chokwe people presented a different story to me which can be read in the book Chokwe Art and Its History.
